Prehabilitation Programme

Capital Neurosurgery’s prehabilitation programme is designed to look at the major lifestyle components that directly influence your ability to undertake and recover from surgery. Our nurse will undertake a thorough assessment with you preoperatively and assist you in setting some realistic and achievable short term and long term goals to improve your overall health before and after surgery.

You will be provided with the information, resources and or referrals to allied health professionals to assist in working towards your individual goals. Our nurse will maintain contact with you during the programme to monitor your progress.

Simple Ways to Promote Healing

Aiming For Healthy Weight & Good Nutrition

Maintaining good nutrition and a healthy body weight pre and post surgery can improve your recovery after surgery. Some of the benefits of healthy eating and good nutrition are; improved well-being, better wound healing, shorter hospital stay & fewer infections after surgery.

Reducing Or Eliminating Smoking & Alcohol Use

Reducing smoking and alcohol use before surgery, can help lower the risk of complications. Abstinence from alcohol or smoking, starting 3-8 weeks before surgery will significantly reduce the incidence of several serious postoperative complications, such as wound infections and cardiopulmonary complications.

Psychological Preparation

Surgery can be a stressful event for many people and it is therefore important to optimise your mental health prior to your operation. Education regarding your surgery assists with mental preparation so please read the information provided by our practice regarding the surgery and recovery, and consider booking a preoperative information session with our nurse. Your GP may be able to refer you to specialist services if required.

Managing Your Pain & Improving Your Strength

Staying active pre -operatively is important because it can help to ease pain. It will make your muscles stronger and help your body to recover post surgery. Discussing pain relief options with your doctor pre and post surgery can ensure that your pain is managed effectively so you can participate in physiotherapy and rehabilitation after your surgery. Ensure to book an appointment with your GP after surgery for ongoing medication management.

Improving Your Sleep

Ensuring that you get enough good sleep before and after surgery can help reduce pain and inflammation, and improve your overall recovery. Good quality sleep is very important to enable your body to heal from the stress of surgery.

How to Get Started

Please discuss with your surgeon, our nurse or our admin staff whether you might be suitable for prehab. If you are booked for surgery there is no additional cost to enrol in the programme. You may wish to complete our self-assessment which can be found in the link below and discuss your results with our nurse.
